The Free Art Fair will take place for the third and final time in London in 2009 at The Barbican. The art fair where all the work is given away at the end will be the biggest best most fun version ever. For once instead of art going to the highest bidder or those who can afford it, someone who really loves an artwork will be able to have it for free. Artists participating will be asked to incorporate the idea of free into their work by making work that they always wanted to make but felt like they couldn’t.

Friday 17th October around 1pm. And the queue has begun!

Some lovely people are in their sleeping bags and duvets. They really love art and are willing to wait to get what they want.

Come to the Fair and become a Turk fruit

Lots of interesting press coverage which you can see in Press. Everyone seems to enjoy becoming a Gavin Turk fruit. Do we all yearn to be commodities? JJ

Free Art Fair is open and no one is in the queue yet!

So we’re open and so far so good. We have about 2000 copies of The Free Art Fair handbook to give away while the show is open, and of course on Sunday all the art will go to some lucky people. I think the show looks great and thank you to all the artists and people who have helped/are helping. Here’s Harry and Harry at the opening party. JJ

Weather is looking good and James Jessop's giving a biggie

We’re looking set fair for Monday, just have to hang 40 artists, which should be fun.  James Jessop is showing “Strange” 243cm X 485cm. This is one you won’t be able to take home on the tube, or bus. We haven’t published pictures of the other artists’ works because we want you to come see them in reality. But here’s a sneak peak of James’ whopper.

Free Art Fair needs your help

WE need volunteers to help invigilate the fair and deal with the opening party and closing giveaway.

Ideally you will be available from monday 13th October to the sunday 19th October for an ENTIRE week (though shorter periods will be considered). The times are daily 11am till 6pm  and the closing on sunday 19th till about 7.30pm.

  • You should be interested in contemporary art, responsible, reliable, and good with the public.
  • The Free Art Fair is totally and utterly free, ie no money is paid, and so we cannot offer travel expenses or lunch.
  • However you will be given a one off drawing by Jasper Joffe to say thank you and you will learn loads and meet lots of interesting people and have fun. Last year’s volunteers have gone on to great things!

Please email Henrik Potter, FAF manager, henrikpotter@hotmail.com with the dates you think you can do (preferably a whole week) and a little bit about yourself.
